  • At what time of day are Weeklys settled and when is the last trading day?
  • Hide

Settlement times and last trading days depend on whether the Weekly option is PM- or AM-settled. All Equity and ETF Weekly options are PM-settled. Index options may be PM-settled or AM-settled. Please see the current list of available Weeklys on http://www.cboe.com/micro/weeklys/availableweeklys.aspx to see which Weekly index options are PM-settled and which are AM-settled.

PM-settled means that exercise and assignment is determined after the close. The last trading day for PM-settled options is the same day as the expiration day, typically a Friday (i.e., assuming no holiday on the Friday). During the last trading day and until the close, the market will be available for investors to enter or close out positions. Check with your brokerage firm about its procedures and deadlines for entering orders or exercising long positions.

AM-settled index options are settled using a special opening quotation on the expiration day, typically a Friday. The last trading day for these options is the day before expiration, typically a Thursday. The index value used to settle the options is calculated using the opening sales price in the primary market of each component security in the index.

In the case of a holiday on what would be the expiration Friday, the expiration date is moved to the day before (i.e, Thursday). The last trading day for PM settled options would then be Thursday and the last trading day for AM-settled options would be Wednesday.

  • A holiday is approaching. What are the procedures for listing and expiring Weeklys during holiday weeks?
  • Hide

In the case of a holiday on the listing date, the listing date is moved back one business day (e.g. from Thursday to Wednesday). In the case of a holiday on the expiration date, the expiration date is moved back one business day (e.g. from Friday to Thursday).
