Weekend Review of Volatility Indexes and ETPs - 12/4/2017 - 12/8/2017

Weekend Review of Volatility Indexes and ETPs - 12/4/2017 - 12/8/2017

Stocks ended the week on a strong note and the result was S&P 500 related volatility indexes doing what they do in 2017 after even a slight move to the upside and lost value.  The curve shifted lower and back into contango. Again, VVIX remains a bit elevated, something that was pointed out a couple of times last week in Hong Kong at our Risk Management Conference.  Steve Sears also discusses the use of VIX options this weekend in his column noting the most common use is hedging. [...]

Weekend Review of Volatility Indexes and ETPs - 11/13/2017 - 11/17/2017

What the heck is going on with VXST on the chart below?  Basically Thanksgiving.  As a nine-day measure of SPX implied volatility this index takes into account options that have their implied volatility under pressure to adjust for extra time decay since we have Thursday off and a half day this coming Friday.  I have a funny feeling this time next week VXST will have fallen back in line (or contango) with the other indexes below.  The long funds were a bit lower last[...]

Weekend Review of Volatility Indexes and ETPs - 10/30/2017 - 11/3/2017

Weekend Review of Volatility Indexes and ETPs - 10/30/2017 - 11/3/2017

VIX closed on an all-time low Friday and VXST was lower on the week as well, but note the right side of the VXST – VIX – VIX3M – VXMT curve where we had a slight rise in both the longer dated S&P 500 related volatility indexes.  The long ETPs were looking good on Monday, but they managed to give it back and more by the end of the week.  Even SKEW and VVIX, which have been holding up relative to VIX most of 2017 are starting to work lower.  Across the spectrum[...]

Weekend Review of Volatility Indexes and ETPs - 10/23/2017 - 10/27/2017

Weekend Review of Volatility Indexes and ETPs - 10/23/2017 - 10/27/2017

Of the four volatility indexes based on SPX option pricing, only VIX was lower last week.  This is the second week where the longer dated indexes (VIX3M and VXMT) rose while VIX was lower. Despite VIX dropping the long ETPs gained ground last week.  This is a great lesson in what these products give you, exposure to VIX futures and both the November and December contracts rose slightly despite the drop in VIX.  Of note on the table below is the majority of green lines versus reddish[...]

Weekend Review of Volatility Indexes and ETPs - 10/16/2017 - 10/20/2017

The short term volatility indexes (VXST and VIX) were up a bit last week as the S&P 500 set multiple all-time closing record highs last week.  VIX3M (formerly VXV) and VXMT were both up slightly resulting the rare ‘term-structure twist’.  It’s really not that rare, I just had a nature documentary voice in my head as I typed that.  The table below has few surprises (beyond VXST and VIX higher).  TYVIX heading to higher levels is a bit of a head scratcher[...]

Weekend Review of Volatility Indexes and ETPs - 10/2/2017 - 10/6/2017

The VXST – VIX – VIXM3 – VXMT curve was mixed with VIX rising but the other three S&P 500 related volatility indexes lower on the week. On the summary table, SKEW and VVIX stand out as indications that risk is lurking around the markets.  As a perspective, we have SKEW data going back to 1990 and Friday’s close places the index higher than 99.11% of all observations.  The long-term average (going back to 2007) for VVIX is 87.71, which places Friday’s[...]

New Developments in Options and Volatility Discussion at CBOE RMC Europe

New Developments in Options and Volatility Discussion at CBOE RMC Europe

The 6th Annual European version of CBOE’s Risk Management Conference kicked off with a presentation from Bill Speth, Vice President of Research and Product Development at CBOE and Tim Edwards, PhD, Senior Director of Index Investment Strategy for S&P Dow Jones Indices.  Tim kicked things off breaking down VIX in several ways and explaining what VIX tells us.  He referred to VIX as a crowd sourced projection of market volatility.  He noted that VIX is mean reverting and[...]

Weekend Review of Volatility Indexes and ETPs - 6/19/2017 - 6/23/2017

Weekend Review of Volatility Indexes and ETPs - 6/19/2017 - 6/23/2017

VXST was slightly higher while the rest of the SPX related volatility indexes dropped last week.  All moves were relatively small as we have truly entered the summer doldrums, at least for broad based index volatility. There’s very little exciting on the table below.  TYVIX bumped up slightly, but is still at very low levels.  VVIX remaining over 80.00 is interesting as traders may continue to take advantage low VIX to get long volatility exposure through buying calls or spreads[...]

Weekend Review of Volatility Indexes and ETPs - 6/12/2017 - 6/16/2017

As the week came to a close VXST which measures 9-day volatility expectations took a dive.  Hence the big drop on the left side of the VXST – VIX – VXV – VXMT diagram below.  TYVIX finished the week below 4.00 which was a first for 2017, but not outside of the long term historical range.  I checked the market expectations for the next FOMC meeting in late July and right now we have a 100% chance of nothing happening.  That much certainty probably justifies[...]

Weekend Review of Volatility Indexes and ETPs - 6/5/2017 - 6/9/2017

Weekend Review of Volatility Indexes and ETPs - 6/5/2017 - 6/9/2017

That little bump in VXST that shows up on the far left side of the diagram below can be attributed to Friday afternoon activity.  VXST rose 0.75 Friday while VIX was up 0.54.  Shorter dated SPX option pricing is used to calculate VXST than VIX.  It may be the weakness Friday afternoon in large cap tech stocks may have traders worrying about the direction of the stock market over the short term.  Several things pop out at me on the table below.  VMAX had a nice week rising[...]

Weekend Review of Volatility Indexes and ETPs - 5/22/2017 - 5/26/2017

VXST closed Friday at an all-time low of 7.60 which sounds impressive until you hear that for VXST the history we have to work with only goes back to 2011.  I am going to make a bold prediction and say that VXST will move higher when the market reopens on Tuesday.  Read that as sarcasm as VXST has never followed a three-day weekend without moving higher.  After having a short period of upward movement, the VIX related funds gave back performance and then some last week.  The[...]

Weekend Review of Volatility Indexes and ETPs - 5/1/2017 - 5/5/2017

The chart below may be one of the final references to the French Election which came to an end this weekend.  Note VXST, which reflects the IV of very short term SPX options was elevated going into the weekend.  I don’t think it is too much of a stretch to say that a quick drop in VXST may be in the cards come Monday morning.  SKEW dropping dramatically last week may be the last bastion of higher volatility dropping.  This happened despite VIX dropping which makes the[...]

Weekend Review of Volatility Indexes and ETPs - 4/24/2017 - 4/28/2017

Weekend Review of Volatility Indexes and ETPs - 4/24/2017 - 4/28/2017

S&P 500 implied volatility was dramatically lower last week.  Of significance is VXV which hit 2017 lows.  I’m teamed up with an academic putting the final touches on a study showing that VXV leads VIX so this may be a signal that the low for VIX in 2017 hasn’t be established and a close below 10.00 is a distinct possibility.  Beyond the long ETPs on the table, which had a pretty tough week, are some other markets worth noting.  First, TYVIX, which was over[...]

Weekend Review of Volatility Indexes and ETPs - 3/27 - 3/31

Weekend Review of Volatility Indexes and ETPs - 3/27 - 3/31

The shift lower in the VXST – VIX – VXV – VXMT curve was 75% parallel and 25% dramatic.  The dramatic move was at the shorter end of the curve where VXST dropped 28% moving from a premium to discount relative to VIX.  As noted volatility was lower across the board.  Of interest below, VVIX finished below 80 and TYVIX remained at very low levels. For the volatility bulls the only glimmer of hope is SKEW around 140, but it is pretty difficult to get excited about[...]

Weekend Review of Volatility Indexes and ETPs - 3/20 - 3/24

Weekend Review of Volatility Indexes and ETPs - 3/20 - 3/24

We finally got a 1% move out of the S&P 500 last week, breaking a streak that has been the focus of many market observers.  The result of the dramatic mid-week drop for SPX was a rise in shorter term implied volatility which shows up nicely below.  For only the second week this year VXX and the other long related ETPs were higher.  VVIX is showing some strength as concern creeps back into the equity markets.  SKEW which reached all-time highs just a week ago, backed off[...]
