    The Week in Russell 2000 Trading - 9/28 - 10/2

    The Week in Russell 2000 Trading - 9/28 - 10/2

For the second week in a row large cap stocks outperformed small cap stocks by about 1.5%.  The big difference this week was that the Russell 1000 (RUI) was higher while the Russell 2000 (RUT) lost value.  The previous week RUI lost less than RUT, but both had pretty lousy weeks.  For the year RUI is now down a little more than 5% while RUT has lost just over 7.5%. The CBOE Russell 2000 Volatility (RVX) index finished the week at a little over a 10% premium to VIX.  This lack[...]

    The Week in Russell 2000 Trading - 9/21 - 9/25

    The Week in Russell 2000 Trading - 9/21 - 9/25

For the previous couple of weeks small cap stocks were the place to be.  That fad came to an abrupt end last week as the Russell 2000 (RUT) dropped almost 3.5%.  Over the same period of time the large cap focused Russell 1000 (RUI) was lower by 1.57%.  In addition to trailing RUI for the week, RUT is now 6.8% lower for 2015 while the RUI is down 5.92%. For a while it appeared the CBOE Russell 2000 Volatility Index (RVX) was going to return to ‘normal’ levels when compared[...]

    The Week in Russell 2000 Trading - 9/14 - 9/18

    The Week in Russell 2000 Trading - 9/14 - 9/18

Once the dust had settled last week, large cap stocks dropped slightly with the Russell 1000 losing 0.10%.  Small cap stocks were the place to be, at least on a week over week basis, as the Russell 2000 rose 0.48%.  It was a frantic trading week due to the first FOMC meeting in a very long time that had some debate and uncertainty as to what the ‘Fed was going to do’.  They did nothing and small cap stocks liked it more than large cap stocks. The relationship between the[...]

    The Week in Russell 2000 Trading - 8/31 - 9/4

The Russell 1000 (RUI) was down 3.31% last week and the Russell 2000 (RUT) lost 2.3%.  This outperformance (I know it doesn’t feel like outperformance) of small caps leads me to ponder the true concerns of market participants that actually put money to work.  The press continues to focus on the Fed’s next move, which will be known in just under two weeks on September 17th.  However, small cap stocks, as a group, are more exposed to the domestic economy than large cap stocks. [...]

    Last Week in Russell 2000 Trading - 8/10 - 8/14

    Last Week in Russell 2000 Trading - 8/10 - 8/14

Large cap stocks eked out a win last week with the Russell 1000 (RUI) rising 0.69% versus a 0.48% gain for the Russell 2000 (RUT). The chart below indexes the performance for RUI and RUT to 100 at the beginning of 2015 for an apples to apples comparison. Despite RUT and RUI basically performing in line with each other, large cap risk, as indicated by index option pricing, dropped a bit relative to small cap risk. The chart below displays the percent premium of the CBOE Russell 2000 Volatility[...]

    The Week in Russell 2000 Trading - 8/3 - 8/7

    The Week in Russell 2000 Trading - 8/3 - 8/7

The Russell 2000 (RUT) was down 2.57% last week, over twice the drop that occurred in the large cap focused Russell 1000 (RUI). This puts large cap stock performance solidly in the lead relative to small caps in 2015. For the year RUT is now up (a strong word for this) 0.18% while RUI is up 1.25%. We saw a strong move in the relationship between small cap and large cap volatility last week. Probably the best way to measure this is to compare the CBOE Russell 2000 Volatility Index (RVX) with VIX[...]

    The Week in Russell 2000 Trading - 7/27 - 7/31

    The Week in Russell 2000 Trading - 7/27 - 7/31

I was on the road for CBOE and on the other side of the world recently so I missed some of the market action of late. I knew the Russell 2000 (RUT) was lagging, but was honestly surprised to see that the small cap dominated RUT performance for 2015 is basically in line with large cap stocks which is represented by the Russell 1000 (RUI) below.  My impression was that China and Greece (storm that has passed - for the moment) were dominating the news.  However, the relative performance[...]

    The Week in Russell 2000 Trading - 7/13 - 7/17

    The Week in Russell 2000 Trading - 7/13 - 7/17

With Greece finally behind us (for now…) the global economic picture is a bit more stable. This resulted in equity markets rebounding last week. Large caps benefited from the resolution of the Euro issues and the Russell 1000 (RUI) gained 2.24% placing the large cap benchmark up 3.59% for the year. Small cap stocks were higher as well, but the Russell 2000 lagged gaining 1.20%.   There is still a bit of a spread between small cap and large cap performance for 2015 as[...]

    The Week in Russell 2000 Trading - 7/6 - 7/10

    The Week in Russell 2000 Trading - 7/6 - 7/10

The week was quite a roller coaster ride for both the large and small cap segments of the equity market. As the week came to an end the Russell 2000 (RUT) was up 0.30% while the Russell 1000 (RUI) lost 0.03%.  As of Friday RUT is 3.93% higher for the year outperforming RUI by 2.61%. The RVX – VIX relationship tested recent lows on Thursday as it is prone to do when global risk is the big market concern.   On Friday, RUT did outperform RUI a bit (up 1.4% versus 1.2%)[...]

    The Week in Russell 2000 Trading - 6/29 - 7/2

    The Week in Russell 2000 Trading - 6/29 - 7/2

During all the market excitement on Monday last week the Russell 2000 dropped 2.6% while the large cap focused Russell 1000 lost 2.1%. The real difference between small cap and large cap stocks occurred after the dust settled from Monday. The Russell 1000 was able to gain 0.9% after to finish the week down 1.2% while the Russell 2000 did a whole lot of nothing and finished the week down 2.5%. This is the first time in a while that large cap stocks have dominated and is a bit surprising since the[...]

    The Week in Russell 2000 Trading - 6/22 - 6/26

Both indexes were lower last week, but the Russell 2000 (RUT) slightly outperformed the Russell 1000 (RUI) and continued to maintain a wide performance gap for 2015. The chart below indexes both the RUT and RUI to 100 as of the last day of 2014 to get an apples to apples visual of their respective performance. As of Friday RUT was up 6.23% while RUI has gained 2.58% this year. The CBOE Russell 2000 Volatility Index (RVX) was down 0.05 for the week finishing at 16.18 while the CBOE Volatility[...]

    The Week in Russell 2000 Trading - 6/15 - 6/19

    The Week in Russell 2000 Trading - 6/15 - 6/19

Small cap stocks dominated last week as the Russell 2000 (RUT) rose 1.55% and even put up an all-time record close on Thursday. Large cap stocks fared OK with the Russell 1000 (RUI) rising 0.66% last week, but unlike the RUT, RUI did not manage to put in a new all-time closing high. We have almost reached the middle of the year and so far RUT is up 6.64% while RUI has risen 3.05%. Large cap expected volatility is best represented by the CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) which was a tad higher last week,[...]

    The Week in Russell 2000 Trading - 6/1 - 6/5

    The Week in Russell 2000 Trading - 6/1 - 6/5

Small cap stocks put up a great week last week with the Russell 2000 (RUT) rising 1.16% while the large cap oriented Russell 1000 (RUI) lost 0.59%. The chart below shows RUT pulling away from RUI for the second time this year – the first time beginning in early March before the lead being ceded to the Russell 1000 for a couple of weeks in May.  As of Friday, RUT is up 4.67% for the year while RUI has gained 2.21%. The difference between large cap and small cap volatility was[...]

    The Week in Russell 2000 Trading - 5/26 - 5/29

    The Week in Russell 2000 Trading - 5/26 - 5/29

Stocks were lower last week, but the small cap sector seemed to hold up a little better than large caps. The Russell 2000 (RUT) was down 0.45% while the Russell 1000 (RUI) was under a bit more pressure dropping 0.88%. RUT had lost the 2015 performance lead to the large cap focused RUI a few weeks ago, but took the lead back in late May. This performance margin widened last week and RUT is now up 3.47% for the year with the RUI up 2.82%. It is a lead, but definitely a slim margin which can change[...]

    The Week in Russell 2000 Option Trading - 5/18 - 5/22

    The Week in Russell 2000 Option Trading - 5/18 - 5/22

Small cap stocks took the lead from large cap stocks for 2015 last week as the Russell 2000 (RUT) was up 0.66% while the Russell 1000 (RUI) rose only 0.20%. That places RUT slightly in the lead up 3.94% for 2015 versus RUI up 3.73% for the year. I came across an article from Friday that was discussing how low volatility is for the Russell 2000. I always like to think of volatility in relative terms and for the CBOE Russell 2000 Volatility Index (RVX) this means comparing it to VIX. Using[...]
