    Weekend Review - Russell 2000 Options and Volatility - 7/5/2016 - 7/8/2016

On Thursday there was a trending hashtag on Twitter #ThursdayThoughts or something like that.  I was tempted to tweet something like “Buy on any weakness #ThursdayThoughts” but was afraid CBOE wouldn’t find the humor in something that looks like a recommendation.  However, if I had done so I would have looked darn good on Friday.  The tide took all ships higher with RUT gaining 2.4% on the day and RUI up 1.5%.  The Friday rally helped place RUT up 3.65% for the[...]

    Weekend Review - Russell 2000 Options and Volatility - 6/27 - 7/1

Small cap stocks, in the form of the Russell 2000 Index (RUT) were up 2.51% last week, which was a nice rebound from the previous week’s reaction to Brexit vote. However, large cap stocks rebounded by a wider margin with the Russell 1000 (RUI) gaining 3.10%. Both benchmark indexes are higher for 2016 but RUI is had a 1.01% lead on RUT (2.85% vs. 1.84%). VIX experienced the biggest weekly drop on record losing just over 42%. The chart below is just as dramatic, but in the other[...]

    Weekend Review - Russell 2000 Volatility and Options - 6/20 - 6/24

Both large and small cap stocks got hit on a week over week basis, with the Russell 2000 (RUT) holding up slightly better (-1.47%) than the Russell 1000 (RUI) which lost 1.62%. For the year both are down less than 1% with RUI holding a slight year to date performance edge of 0.40%. In the past when there is heightened concern regarding the global equity markets the RVX / VIX premium tends to drop to low level. That happened in early 2016 and that happened again Friday as the premium[...]

    Weekend Review - Russell 2000 Options and Volatility - 6/13 - 6/17

Despite global concerns dominating the market chatter last week, large cap stocks outperformed small cap stocks. Both were lower as the Russell 1000 (RUI) lost 1.16% while the Russell 2000 (RUT) gave up 1.65%. RUI widened the lead on RUT and is now up 1.33% for 2016 while RUT is still higher, but by only 0.78%. The CBOE Russell 2000 Volatility Index (RVX) rose last week, but not nearly as much as the gains we saw from VIX. As global concerns entered the marketplace, the RVX[...]

The Smooth Process Known as Russell Reconstitution

The Smooth Process Known as Russell Reconstitution

June means a lot of different things to different people. For my kids it’s get out of school time. For my wife it’s how long until my kids go back to school time. For me it is Russell Reconstitution time. Before joining CBOE I would monitor the reconstitution process and try to trade around stocks that were going to be added or deleted from the Russell 2000. Now as an employee of CBOE I monitor the process since we are home for options trading on many FTSE Russell Indexes. Four of those[...]

    Weekend Review - Russell 2000 Options and Volatility - 6/6 - 6/10

Only 5 basis points separate the 2016 performance for the Russell 2000 (RUT) and Russell 1000 (RUI). As of Friday RUI was in the lead, but do note early last week RUT finally surpassed RUI performance for 2016. The CBOE Russell 2000 Volatility Index (RVX) rose last week, as did just about every volatility index CBOE calculates. However, the rise in RVX lagged the rise in VIX on a percentage basis which resulted in a drop in the RVX / VIX premium to the lowest levels since March of this[...]

    Weekend Review - Russell 2000 Index and Volatility - 5/31 - 6/3

The Russell 2000 - How about that??? I hear Mel Allen’s voice as I type that. Small caps went on a relative tear last week with the Russell 2000 (RUT) rising 1.19% last week while the large cap focused Russell 1000 was up 0.10%. This places RUT up 2.49% for 2016, within striking distance of the Russell 1000 which is up 2.73% year to date. More impressive is the relative performance since the lows in February. RUT has rebounded 22.1% off this year’s closing low and RUI is up 15.6% over[...]

    Weekend Review - Russell 2000 Index and Volatility - 5/23 - 5/27

Small cap stocks continue to show some strength with the Russell 2000 (RUT) beating the Russell 1000 (RUI) for the second week in a row. Is this the beginning of a streak? RUT rose 3.43% last week while the large cap focused RUI gained 2.28%. For the year RUT is now up 1.28%, still lagging RUI which is up 2.63%. The RVX / VIX premium remains at the high end of this year’s range, despite the strong performance from small cap stocks. It may be that the uncertainty about the Fed’s[...]

    Weekend Review - Russell 2000 Index and Volatility - 5/9 - 5/13

According to some of the headlines I came across this week, stock market participants are worried about economic growth. This concern about growth showed up in the relative performance of the Russell 2000 (RUT) and Russell 1000 (RUI) this week as RUT was down twice as much as RUI (-1.10% versus -0.54%). This places RUT down a little less than 3% for the year and RUI precariously in the green by a single basis point. Concerns over growth continue to show up in the relationship between[...]

Russell 2000 Futures vs. Short Call Spread from Last Week

Russell 2000 Futures vs. Short Call Spread from Last Week

Every weekend I write a brief blog discussing the performance of the Russell 2000, how the CBOE Russell 2000 Volatility Index is reacting to market conditions, and pick out a RUT trade or other piece of market information that looks interesting (at least to me). Last week I noted a bear call spread using Russell 2000 Index Options that sold a deep in the money call and purchased a slightly out of the money call, both of which expired this week. The specific trade involved selling the RUT May 13th[...]

    Weekend Review - Russell 2000 Options and Volatility - 5/2 - 5/6

Small cap stocks get so close and then seem to fall back when reaching unchanged on the year or catching up with the performance of large cap stocks. This week the Russell 2000 (RUT) dropped 1.44% while the large cap focused Russell 1000 (RUI) lost 0.49%. This places RUT in the red by 1.86% for 2016 while RUI is still up 0.55%. With the underperformance of small cap stocks last week came a relative rise in the CBOE Russell 2000 Volatility Index (RVX). The RVX / VIX premium began the[...]

    Weekend Review - Russell 2000 Index and Volatility - 4/25 - 4/29

Stocks had a tough week and the Russell 2000 (RUT) was down 1.4% on the week and took the small cap benchmark from positive to negative territory for 2016. Large cap stocks held up a bit better with the Russell 1000 (RUI) losing 1.26% and the large cap benchmark remains positive on the year by just over 1%. Even though RUT underperformed a bit, the CBOE Russell 2000 Volatility Index (RVX) premium to VIX dropped a bit and both volatility indexes climbed last week.  The RVX / VIX[...]

    Weekend Review - Russell 2000 Index and Volatility - 4/18 - 4/22

For the first time in 2016 the Russell 2000 (RUT) moved into positive territory last week. A gain of 1.4% places RUT just under 1% in the green for the year. Small caps also closed the gap with large cap stocks as the Russell 1000 (RUI) was up by 0.60% and is less than 1.5% higher than RUT for the year. Despite the run in small caps, the CBOE Russell 2000 Volatility Index remained relatively high compared to VIX last week. I take this as being an indication that there are not a[...]

    Weekend Review - Russell 2000 Options and Volatility - 4/11 - 4/15

One of my favorite books when I was a wee lad was “The Little Engine That Could”. When I see the Russell 2000 (RUT) coming very close to going from red to green on the year that story pops in my mind as I personify RUT saying, “I think I can” with the small cap benchmark approaching unchanged on the year. Last week RUT was up by 3% which places the index just 44 basis points in the red for 2016. Pretty impressive for an index that was down as much as 16% on the year.[...]
