    Weekend Review - Volatility Indexes and ETPs - 10/10 - 10/14

    Weekend Review - Volatility Indexes and ETPs - 10/10 - 10/14

On a percentage basis VIX was the big winner among the four S&P 500 related volatility indexes.  VIX gained just over 19% while VXST was up about 13%.  The longer end of the curve is often less responsive to drops in the stock market.  VXV and VXMT behaved as they normally do and rose about 6% and 4% respectively. The long ETPs had a nice week with the unleveraged funds gaining over 5% and the leveraged funds putting up gains of over 10%.  As I like to say, the[...]

    Weekend Review - Volatility Indexes and ETPs - 8/29 - 9/2

    Weekend Review - Volatility Indexes and ETPs - 8/29 - 9/2

The VXST – VIX – VXV – VXMT curve does what it normally does on a pre three-day weekend week and got steeper.  It’s been a while since I ran the numbers but I’m fairly certain VXST almost always drops before a holiday weekend and then rebounds when we all return to work refreshed and ready to trade. SKEW below 130 was the first thing that stood out to me on the table below.  A quick check and I saw that it had been consistently higher than 130[...]

A Little Perspective on Yesterday's Record High SKEW

A Little Perspective on Yesterday's Record High SKEW

We have data for the CBOE SKEW Index (SKEW) going back to the first trading day in 1990. Yesterday, SKEW finished the day at the highest level over this period closing at 153.66. The chart below shows the annual high low and average by year going back to 1990. That highest green dot is yesterday’s close. So exactly what does that mean? In simple terms it means the relative implied volatility for SPX out of the money puts is elevated when compared to near at the money puts. SKEW[...]

CBOE SKEW Index Rose to 153.66 on June 28, Its All-Time High

On June 28 the CBOE SKEW Index rose to 153.66, the all-time high for its price history that began in January 1990. Here are the relatively high values for the CBOE SKEW Index in recent days -- 15-Jun                   140.91 16-Jun                   142.50 17-Jun                   137.94 20-Jun               [...]

    Weekend Review - Volatility Indexes and ETPs - 4/4 - 4/8

    Weekend Review - Volatility Indexes and ETPs - 4/4 - 4/8

The S&P 500 lost a little over 1.2% last week, but the impact on volatility indexes was more than one would expect from loss like that for the S&P 500. Most significant to me was that both the 3-month (VXV) and 6-month (VXMT) S&P 500 oriented volatility indexes returned to average 2015 levels. This was something I was a bit obsessed with to begin 2016. The shorter end of the curve is still below last year’s average, but a few more weeks like last week and we will be right back to[...]

    Weekend Review - Volatility Indexes and ETPs - 3/21 - 3/24

    Weekend Review - Volatility Indexes and ETPs - 3/21 - 3/24

The S&P 500 was slightly lower last week, ruining a five week winning streak.  This gave three of the four volatility indexes on the chart below a chance to rebound from 2016 lows.  The exception is VXST, but we give this one a break since three day weekends are always tough on VXST. The choppiness in the volatility space last week, along with the front month future actually losing a little value did no favors for the VIX related ETPs.  UVXY was up almost 9% for the week early[...]

Weekend Review - Volatility Indexes and ETPs 3/7 - 3/11

Weekend Review - Volatility Indexes and ETPs 3/7 - 3/11

Three out of the four S&P 500 based volatility indexes dropped last week with the longer term focused VXMT rising slightly.  I went on a data fishing expedition with respect to weeks where VXMT and the S&P 500 rose, but couldn’t find a definitive patters.  I even looked at the predictive power going out as far as six months and got nada.  I did find out that both the S&P 500 and VXMT have risen in sync 52 times since 2008, which is interesting and a bit surprising,[...]

    Weekly Review - Volatility Indexes and ETPs - 1/11 - 1/15

    Weekly Review - Volatility Indexes and ETPs - 1/11 - 1/15

In an interesting twist VIX was the underperforming index across the VXST – VIX – VXV – VXMT curve rising only 0.01 last week.  It is unusual for VIX to be an outlier like this, but even more so when we experience a three day weekend which one would expect to put some pressure on VXST relative to the longer dated volatility indexes. VXX rose about 7 ½% last week despite the paltry 0.01 gain in VIX.  We all know that VXX is not VIX or even any sort of[...]

Is The Fed’s CCAR Pushing Up the SKEW Index and Driving More Demand for O-T-M SPX Puts?

Is The Fed’s CCAR Pushing Up the SKEW Index and Driving More Demand for O-T-M SPX Puts?

In a December 8 Bloomberg news report - “Who's the Bear Driving Up the Price of U.S. Stock Options?” - Joseph Ciolli wrote – “For more than a year, dealers in the U.S. equity derivatives market have noted a widening gap in the price of certain options. If you want to buy a put to protect against losses in the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index, often you’ll pay twice as much as you would for a bullish call betting on gains. New research suggests the divergence is[...]

    Weekly Review - Volatility Indexes and ETPs - 11/30 - 12/4

    Weekly Review - Volatility Indexes and ETPs - 11/30 - 12/4

This week I’m reporting in from Singapore where we are about to open the Asian version of The Options Institute at the Singapore Exchange (SGX).  I don’t have a feel for the market activity from last week, but I can read the numbers and can only imagine what a ride it was for some traders last week.  I added the Thursday close to the VXST – VIX – VXMT – VXV graph that shows up below since a week over week chart just doesn’t do justice to what occurred[...]

    Weekly Review - Volatility Indexes and ETPs - 11/23 - 11/27

    Weekly Review - Volatility Indexes and ETPs - 11/23 - 11/27

Very quiet holiday week.  There really isn’t much else to say, but it is interesting that VIX remains over 15.00.  I’m also attributing the rise in VXST to getting a holiday shortened week behind us.  Man I’m glad it’s not my job to fill up a business network with programming which must have been a heck of a challenge last week, especially on Friday. The funds were quiet as well, but you have to snicker when a 2.7% change (see VXX below) is considered[...]

In my preparations for the trip, I am analyzing the skew charts for a number of option classes, including options on the S&P 500®, the CBOE Volatility Index® (VIX®), and the EEM and FXI ETFs. SKEW CHART FOR SPX OPTIONS As noted in the White Paper on the CBOE SKEW[...]

The Week in Volatility Indexes and ETPs - 10/26 - 10/30

The Week in Volatility Indexes and ETPs - 10/26 - 10/30

When I do these blogs I get the data, create the graphics and look at the markets.  I share these mundane facts about my ‘process’ to make a point about the diagram below.  Last week we got an FOMC meeting (although one without a press conference) and GDP number behind us without the stock market did not reacting negatively.  We are looking forward to the October employment report that comes out this Friday, but we did get two of the big three economic events behind us. [...]

The Week in Volatility Indexes and ETPs - 10/12 - 10/16

The Week in Volatility Indexes and ETPs - 10/12 - 10/16

VIX closed under 16.00 for the first time since all the hubbub that occurred in late August as the S&P 500 continued to recover last week gaining 0.90%.  Among the four S&P 500 focused volatility Indexes VIX was the biggest loser shedding almost 12%.  I had been keeping a close eye on VXV as the 3 month time frame that VXV measures comes after the December FOMC announcement.  VXV fell a bit relative to VXMT (6 month volatility) which may be a FOMC indicator and may also be[...]
