Weekend Review of VIX Futures and Options - 1/9 - 1/13

Last week VIX managed to finish the day below the 2016 closing low (11.27) twice.  If it were only Friday’s close I’d throw an asterisk in there for the three-day weekend effect, but there’s no holiday excuse for the Wednesday close of 11.26. This past week they (whoever ‘they’ are) couldn’t get enough of February VIX Calls.  On Friday, paper bought over 60,000 VIX Feb 21 Calls for 0.49.  On Thursday, there were three block trades of[...]

Record Volume and Open Interest in 2016 for CBOE Index Products

CBOE index products continue to attract growing interest from investors who wish to manage the income and volatility in their portfolios. A recent press release by CBOE Holdings noted that -- “… Several trading records were set [in 2016]. Total volume and average daily volume (ADV) in index options trading at CBOE reached new all-time highs for the fourth consecutive year in 2016 with 430.7 million and 1.7 million contracts, respectively, each up 6 percent from 2015. Total volume and[...]

Weekend Review VIX Options and Futures 12/12 - 12/16

VIX was up slightly last week despite the markets having a relatively muted response to the first rate hike from the FOMC in just under a year.  The December VIX futures which expire this coming Wednesday actually dropped a bit as they had been slightly elevated relative to spot VIX.  One would never think the markets digested a rate hike last week by looking at the volatility market price action below. Wednesday last week there was a trader who decided volatility is going[...]

BigTrends.com Weekly Market Outlook - Can The Rally Continue?

Even though the market didn't end the week on a wildly bullish foot, it ended the week with another respectable gain. The S&P 500 (SPX) (SPY) was up 0.8% for the five day span following the previous week's 3.8% gain.... and all of that 3.8% gain came in just the last three days of that election week. Either way, the persistent bullishness has left the S&P 500 within striking distance of record highs. It's still got a bit of a valuation problem, but between the momentum and this bullish[...]

Bond Market Moves May Lead to - 'Normal Markets'?

The amazing sell off in the bond market over the past couple weeks since the election ended did not go unnoticed by market players. I've seen a ton of articles now proclaiming the 'bull market in bonds is over', and the 'bear is going to growl over bonds'. Yet, the long bond has not even reached the highest levels seen in 2015! All the sudden, the calls for the end of the bond bull are everywhere? It might be true, but color me skeptical (so far). How many calls for this bond market bull to end?[...]

    BigTrends.com Weekly Market Outlook - October 31, 2016

Stocks tried to get the market back in a bullish groove, staging a pretty solid advance on Monday of last week. It wasn't meant to be though. That rally effort petered out beginning on Tuesday, and then accelerated as the week wore on with the weight of a big Q2 rally still getting in the way. By the time Friday's closing bell rang most of the indices were within easy reach of a major support level. One stumble this week could finally pop this fragile (albeit short-term) bubble. And if there was[...]
  • BigTrends.com Weekly Market Outlook - Mildly Bullish Undertow

Stocks managed to log a gain last week, but it was a "just barely" situation. The S&P 500 (SPX) (SPY) ended only 0.1% higher than it ended the prior week, and still closed below all of its key technical resistance levels. The bulls are going to have to do better than this to achieve escape velocity. Still, the undertow remains technically bullish, and a break above the ceilings here is within easy reach. We'll look at the hurdles and weigh the odds after a quick run-down of last[...]

    BigTrends.com Weekly Market Outlook - September 26, 2016

While the market may have ended last week on a sour note, a little pre-weekend profit-taking can't entirely come as a surprise. Once traders learned on Wednesday the Federal Reserve wouldn't be imposing a rate-hike this month, they celebrated in the form of a 1.7% advance that lasted all the way through Thursday's close. Friday's 0.6% lull didn't even drag any of the major indices back below their most important technical levels. Still, stocks could just as easily kick-start a pullback here as they[...]

    Weekend Review - VIX Futures and Options - 9/19 - 9/23

VIX reacted to the post FOMC rally by giving up just over 20% last week.  The standard September contract went off the board leaving October to take over as the front month.  With a little time until October expiration (10/19) the result has been resumption of pretty steep contango.  Of course there are some potentially market moving events between now and the end of the year so VIX futures bracing for some sort of spike may be expected. As I wrote the previous paragraph[...]

BigTrends.com Weekly Market Outlook - Key Levels To Watch Here

Things were going fine last week... until Friday, when it all came completely unraveled.  Friday's 2.45% stumble in the S&P 500 (SPX) (SPY) was not only the biggest single-day loss since June when the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union, it carried the market to its lowest close since early-July. Some key support levels were snapped too. Bad news? Maybe, though ironically, the sheer size of Friday's meltdown has a shot at spurring a dead-cat bounce (not unlike the post-Brexit[...]

BigTrends.com Weekly Market Outlook - Two Month Range Continues

Despite a couple of scares, stocks ended last week intact, and even up just a bit thanks to Friday's gain. On the other hand, last week's action still left the S&P 500 (SPX) (SPY) along with the other indices overvalued and overbought. Whether or not that matters remains to be seen, though it's interesting that the bears had more than ample opportunity to push the market over the cliff -- but they just never did it. All the same, the first full week of the worst month of the year for stocks[...]

    BigTrends.com Weekly Market Outlook - August 29, 2016

Unable to resist the weight of its 9% gain since its late-June low, the S&P 500 (SPX) (SPY) finally started to buckle last week. The index only lost 0.68% for the five-day span, but that was the worst weekly performance since June, and could end up serving as the profit-taking excuse some traders have been waiting for. We'll look at the matter in more detail after a closer look at last week's and this week's economic numbers. They matter more than usual now, with the prospect of rising interest[...]

BigTrends.com Weekly Market Outlook - Tug Of War Continues

For the second week in a row, stocks were content to simply drift sideways.... the result of opposing factors simultaneously weighing on investors' mind. From one direction stocks are being buoyed by low interest rates that could linger for a while, while from the other direction the market's high valuations may be keeping a lid on things. The bulls are technically winning the war, but it's a marginal victory and the tide could turn quite easily. We'll weigh the odds in a moment. Let's[...]

Successful Launch for New SPX Monday-Expiring Weeklys Options

On August 15 CBOE launched trading of the new S&P 500® Index (SPX) Monday-expiring Weeklys options. Daily trading volume for the new SPX Monday Weeklys in the first two days was 4,334 on August 15, and 10,829 on August 16. Institutional investors have told me that the SPX Monday Weeklys could have potential to be very helpful to them in managing their over-the-weekend risk. SPX Weeklys are one of CBOE’s fastest-growing products, with volume in 2015 setting a 10th consecutive annual[...]
