Record Volume Day for CBOE and SPX Options, as VIX Index Has Its Biggest One-Week Jump

Record Volume Day for CBOE and SPX Options, as VIX Index Has Its Biggest One-Week Jump

This past week the CBOE Volatility Index® (VIX®) rose 118.5%, its largest move ever (in percentage terms) in one calendar week. On Friday CBOE®, C2 Exchange and the CBOE’s S&P 500® (SPX) options all experienced record volume days, with estimated volume of 11 million options contracts traded on CBOE.  A news report at Marketwatch noted –“Across the globe, investors dumped anything with a whiff of “risk” as an economic slowdown in China accelerates,[...]

The Week in Volatility Indexes and ETPs - 8/17 - 8/21

The Week in Volatility Indexes and ETPs - 8/17 - 8/21

The S&P 500 was down 5.77% and S&P 500 related volatility indexes did exactly what traders would expect. They shot higher and the curve became as inverted as it has been in the last three to four years. I’m pretty sure the last time the VXST – VIX – VXV – VXMT curve was in this sort of backwardation was in August 2011. For the record VXST was up 231%, VIX rose 118%, VXV gained 51%, and VXMT was higher by about 34% for the week.   Before the week began, XIV[...]

    Last Week in Russell 2000 Trading - 8/10 - 8/14

    Last Week in Russell 2000 Trading - 8/10 - 8/14

Large cap stocks eked out a win last week with the Russell 1000 (RUI) rising 0.69% versus a 0.48% gain for the Russell 2000 (RUT). The chart below indexes the performance for RUI and RUT to 100 at the beginning of 2015 for an apples to apples comparison. Despite RUT and RUI basically performing in line with each other, large cap risk, as indicated by index option pricing, dropped a bit relative to small cap risk. The chart below displays the percent premium of the CBOE Russell 2000 Volatility[...]

The Week in Volatility Indexes and ETPs - 8/10 - 8/14

The Week in Volatility Indexes and ETPs - 8/10 - 8/14

Three out of four volatility indexes calculated using S&P 500 Index options to determine a consistent measure of implied volatility were lower last week. For all of 2015 the father dated volatility indexes have been elevated relative to VXST and VIX. We are now approaching a time where the potential for a rate hike is closing in. That may be the reason VXV held up last week while the other three indexes dropped. The stock market had a rocky ride, but finished the week higher. Everyone’s[...]

Barron's Striking Price Column Highlights VIX Weeklys

Barron's Striking Price Column Highlights VIX Weeklys

This past weekend Steven Sears committed the whole Striking Price column in Barron’s to VIX Weeklys. I would strongly suggest checking out the full column, as well as reading it every weekend as it is a great way to learn more about options. Some highlights include – Weekly VIX futures contracts were introduced July 23th and the options are expected to begin trading on October 8th The shorter dated VIX futures are expected (and already have been) to track spot VIX more closely[...]

    The Week in Russell 2000 Trading - 7/27 - 7/31

    The Week in Russell 2000 Trading - 7/27 - 7/31

I was on the road for CBOE and on the other side of the world recently so I missed some of the market action of late. I knew the Russell 2000 (RUT) was lagging, but was honestly surprised to see that the small cap dominated RUT performance for 2015 is basically in line with large cap stocks which is represented by the Russell 1000 (RUI) below.  My impression was that China and Greece (storm that has passed - for the moment) were dominating the news.  However, the relative performance[...]

    The Week in VIX - 7/27 - 7/31

    The Week in VIX - 7/27 - 7/31

The S&P 500 was up over 1% and both spot VIX and VIX futures suffered the consequences.   Spot VIX lost almost 12% and the August future was down about 6% last week. VIX Weeklys futures were launched a couple of weeks ago and the first short dated contract expires this coming Wednesday on the open. I decided it was time for a quick look at how the nearest term contract has been tracking along with VIX. Day by day changes won’t tell us much so I sent my very competent summer intern[...]

The Week in Volatility Indexes and ETPs - 7/27 - 7/31

The Week in Volatility Indexes and ETPs - 7/27 - 7/31

I was reminded of my advancing age several times this past week. I’ll save those incidents for the other grumpy aging men on my block. One of the benefits (let me believe this) of being around for a while is having lived through a variety of market environments. This market got me thinking about John Gotti who was the boss of the Gambino family back in the day. One of his monikers was “The Teflon Don” as he was put on trial three times and acquitted three times. Teflon is a substance[...]

    VIX Weeklys Futures Rose Today

Today the new nearby VIX® Weeklys futures (ticker “31VX/Q5,” with an August 5 expiration) rose about 7% and had a daily settlement value of 15.325. Here is a screenshot of the delayed quotes table at 3:28 pm CT today -  The detailed futures quote table below showed expiration dates, prices, and volumes for VIX futures with the new Weeklys expirations and standard expirations.    Investors with Bloomberg terminals can see detailed VIX futures information[...]

Following Up on The Case for a 24-Hour VIX

Following Up on The Case for a 24-Hour VIX

For the second weekend in a row The Striking Price column in Barron’s had me at the headline. Last week, Bill Luby was the guest columnist, and it was about small cap volatility and the Russell 2000. Steve Sears (the guy that came up with the term 'fear index') was back at the helm this week and the words “The Case for a 24-Hour VIX” called out to me to read more. Anyone that has an interest in VIX should take a look at the full article, but here are some highlights. Sears[...]

    The Week in Russell 2000 Trading - 7/13 - 7/17

    The Week in Russell 2000 Trading - 7/13 - 7/17

With Greece finally behind us (for now…) the global economic picture is a bit more stable. This resulted in equity markets rebounding last week. Large caps benefited from the resolution of the Euro issues and the Russell 1000 (RUI) gained 2.24% placing the large cap benchmark up 3.59% for the year. Small cap stocks were higher as well, but the Russell 2000 lagged gaining 1.20%.   There is still a bit of a spread between small cap and large cap performance for 2015 as[...]

Block Trade - $NFLX Butterfly into Earnings

Block Trade - $NFLX Butterfly into Earnings

I think just about every trader focused on stocks or equity options is aware that Netflix (NFLX) reported yesterday after the close.  Also we all know that the stock market seemed to like what they heard. I like to focus on earnings and search around for trades that were implemented just before an earnings release. Before jumping to the trade I came across, I want to discuss a couple of pieces of information that may be useful before trading around an earnings report. Every week I post[...]

TYVIX Weekly Review - 7/11/2015 by Catherine Shalen

TYVIX Weekly Review - 7/11/2015 by Catherine Shalen

Every day Brings a New Twist to TYVIX, Benchmark for Treasury Volatility The referendum in Greece on Sunday was a non-event for Treasury volatility. TYVIX opened at 6.70 on Monday, 1.82% above its closing value on July 2nd, but by 10:30, TYVIX was back to 6.58. Equity and FX volatilities were more reactive. VIX opened 11.08% higher, EUVIX 6.71% higher, JYVIX 5.74% higher and BPVIX 3.32% higher. After this open, Treasury prices began a rally which lasted until Thursday, as investors responded to[...]

The Week in Volatility Indexes and ETPs - 7/6 - 7/10

The Week in Volatility Indexes and ETPs - 7/6 - 7/10

From the pre-Independence day July 2nd close to this past Friday VXST was down 0.73, VIX was up by 0.04, VXV was 0.05 higher and VXMT finished 0.28 higher. VXST is sort of an anomaly as there is a 3-day weekend impact that pushes the index lower. As the week over week change does no justice in showing the actual price action from last week I included the Thursday closing curve to show that last week was anything but boring. Note on the table below both VXX (and the similar funds) and SVXY (plus[...]

Bullish, Bearish, and Neutral Trades from Today

Bullish, Bearish, and Neutral Trades from Today

One of the fun parts of working at the Options Institute is looking into how large traders react to different market environments. Since today was a pretty exciting day in the markets I decided to look at block trading activity from the end of the day today. The result is a bullish, bearish, and neutral trade executed respectively in the Russell 2000, S&P 500, and VIX option markets today. First, the bullish Russell 2000 trade. With RUT very close to 1228 there was a bullish diagonal spread executed[...]
