Weekend Review of VIX Futures and Options - 9/25/2017 - 9/29/2017

Weekend Review of VIX Futures and Options - 9/25/2017 - 9/29/2017

VIX remains at low levels and the curve continues to be steep as the volatility markets appear to be braced for ‘something’.  That something is probably an unknown unknown that will shock some very complacent markets.  An interesting VIX trade caught my eye on Friday as it were a little different than most of the trades I’ve come across.  First the trade details and then a little color about that trade.  Friday morning, with VIX around 9.50, there was a buyer[...]

    Weekend Review of Russell 2000 Options and Volatility - 9/25/2017 - 9/29/2017

Small cap stocks still lag, but the Russell 2000 (RUT) made quite a run over the past couple of weeks and is now up 9.85% on the year compared to 12.5% for the Russell 1000 (RUI).  Friday was the end of the third quarter and with the late quarter move RUT ended up 5.33% higher while RUI gained 3.97%.  The relationship between the CBOE Russell 2000 Volatility Index (RVX) and VIX visited 2017 lows over the past couple of weeks as small cap stocks outperformed large caps.  Despite the[...]

Block Trade Analysis - VIX Roll Trade

Block Trade Analysis - VIX Roll Trade

Back in the day, when I was a lad in Junior High School, the Dead Kennedys remade the theme to the TV show Rawhide.  The song begins, “Rollin’ rollin’ rollin’”, which is the ear worm I get when I see a trade like we had in the VIX pit today.  Specifically, an October spread that got put on in July was rolled out to December.    The first part of the story begins on Friday July 21st when a trader initiated a spread that sold 1 VIX Oct 12 Put for 0.75,[...]

    Weekend Review of Russell 2000 Options and Volatility - 9/11/2017 - 9/15/2017

Small cap stocks had a great week last week with the Russell 2000 (RUT) rising 2.25% which the large cap focused Russell 1000 (RUI) was up about 1.6%.  For the year RUI still has just over a 6% lead on RUT. Small cap volatility as measured by the CBOE Russell 2000 Volatility Index (RVX) has spent most of 2017 at a historically high premium relative to large cap volatility, best depicted by VIX.  The chart below shows RVX basically crashing to the lowest levels seen in 2017 last week. [...]

Volatility: Harvest Premia or Hedge Risk?

Volatility: Harvest Premia or Hedge Risk?

Abhinandan Deb from Bank of America Merrill Lynch led a discussion with Roni Israelov from AQR and Neale Jackson from 36 South Capital Advisors to kick off the afternoon session at RMC today.  This was a unique session in that the panelists compared and contrasted either harvesting risk premium or hedging risk with volatility which was appropriately titled Volatility: Harvest Premia or Hedge Risk? An opening statement from Roni was that we are here learning about not losing money or manage risk[...]

The Current Volatility Environment Discussion at CBOE RMC

The Current Volatility Environment Discussion at CBOE RMC

Maneesh Deshpande from Barclays discussed The Current Volatility Environment today at CBOE RMC Europe.  In a wide-ranging talk, he covered the current low volatility regime, how VIX related ETPs may be impacting the derivatives markets and addressed the common question, “How low can VIX go?”.  He started out addressing the question, “Why is VIX low?”.  He noted that realized volatility has been very low, but this is common during market rallies.  He also[...]

Chris Concannon, President and COO of CBOE Holdings offered a company update at CBOE’s Risk Management Conference today in London.  He started off noting that it has been just over a year since the CBOE-Bats deal was announced and six months since the close of the deal.  Significant progress has been made in the integration of the two companies.  Specific for European traders, Chris noted that liquidity and volume is strong for SPX options as well as VIX options and futures[...]

Weekend Review of Russell 2000 Options and Volatility 7/24/2017 - 7/28/2017

Weekend Review of Russell 2000 Options and Volatility 7/24/2017 - 7/28/2017

Large cap stocks held up better than small caps last week and the Russell 1000 (RUI) is now outperforming the Russell 2000 (RUT) by just about 1.00% for the third quarter.  I had high hopes for small cap stocks in the second half of 2017, but those hopes are starting to fade.   The CBOE Russell 2000 (RVX) premium to VIX topped 50% for the first time since early June.  My excuse for the higher RVX to VIX relationship has been blamed on VIX, but with VIX rising a bit next week I have[...]

    Weekend Review of Russell 2000 Options and Volatility - 7/17/2017 - 7/21/2017

Small and large cap index finished the week in what I will call a statistical tie up about 0.5%.  For the year the Russell 1000 (RUI) is now up over 10% while the Russell 2000 has gained a respectable 5.8% in 2017.  We are early in the 3rd quarter of the year, but so far RUI is up 1.98% versus RUT 1.45%.  With VIX so low the CBOE Russell 2000 Volatility (RVX) premium to VIX has popped up a bit.  I’m attributing more to low VIX than high small cap volatility.  It[...]

    Weekend Review of Russell 2000 Options and Volatility - 7/10/2017 - 7/14/2017

    Weekend Review of Russell 2000 Options and Volatility - 7/10/2017 - 7/14/2017

Stocks had a nice week with many indexes achieving all-time highs.  Small cap stocks in the form of the Russell 2000 (RUT) gained 0.92%, but this rise was outpaced by the Russell 1000 (RUI) which was up 1.4% for the week.  Lately I’ve been fixated on the relationship between the CBOE Russell 2000 Volatility Index (RVX) and VIX.  The RVX premium had been shrinking which led me to think a resurgence in relative performance for small caps was on the horizon.  This trend reversed[...]

    Weekend Review of Russell 2000 Options and Volatility - 7/3/2017 - 7/7/2017

Small and large cap stocks finished week in what I will call a statistical tie performance wise.  The Russell 1000 (RUI) gained 0.02% while the Russell 2000 (RUT) was up 0.03%.  If this were an election RUI supporters would be calling for a recount.  I’m pretty convinced RUT is poised for a period of catching up to RUI and I looked smart on Monday as RUT gained 0.80% to RUI’s 0.25% rise, but with an increase in market volatility RUT fell back in line with RUI. The CBOE[...]

    Weekend Review of Russell 2000 Options and Volatility - 6/26/2017 - 6/30/2017

Small caps in the form of the Russell 2000 (RUT) were up slightly last week while the Russell 1000 (RUI) was down slightly.  Friday marked the end of the second quarter.  Both RUT and RUI were higher for the second quarter with RUT gaining 2.12% while the large cap focused RUI was 2.55% higher.  We all know RUT had stellar performance from election day to the end of 2016 on both and absolute and relative basis when compared to RUI.  However, RUT has consistently underperformed[...]

FTSE Russell Reconstitution Completed this Friday

FTSE Russell Reconstitution Completed this Friday

This is a big week for the FTSE Russell suite of indexes.  On Friday, a large number of indexes will undergo what is referred to as the annual reconstitution.  Specifically, the final phase of this process will occur on the market close Friday as stocks move into or out of indexes.  The index we care most about at CBOE is the Russell 2000 which is the standard benchmark index for small cap managers in the US.  Also, RUT options are the 3rd most actively traded broad based index[...]

    Weekend Review of Russell 2000 Options and Volatility - 6/12/2017 - 6/16/2017

    Weekend Review of Russell 2000 Options and Volatility - 6/12/2017 - 6/16/2017

Small cap stocks lost some of the recently gained ground relative to large cap stocks last week.   The Russell 2000 (RUT) was down over 1% while the large cap focused Russell 1000 (RUI) was up slightly.  The spread of RUI to RUT out performance for 2017 has now widened to almost 5%. Despite the tough week for small cap stocks the CBOE Russell 2000 Volatility Index (RVX) finished Friday at a 2017 low.  This lower relative level for RVX pushed the RVX to VIX ratio to the lowest[...]

    Weekend Review of Russell 2000 Options and Volatility - 6/5/2017 - 6/9/2017

    Weekend Review of Russell 2000 Options and Volatility - 6/5/2017 - 6/9/2017

Small cap stocks prevailed last week as the Russell 2000 (RUT) gained over 1% while the Russell 1000 (RUI) was lower by about 1/3 of 1%.  Large cap stocks still hold a lead over small caps in 2017, but the Russell 2000 has kept pace with the Russell 1000 since the end of the first quarter so all the large cap outperformance may be attributed to the first three months of 2017.  On the volatility front VIX and the CBOE Russell 2000 Volatility Index (RVX) rose last week, with the relative[...]
