    The Week in Russell 2000 Trading - 7/6 - 7/10

    The Week in Russell 2000 Trading - 7/6 - 7/10

The week was quite a roller coaster ride for both the large and small cap segments of the equity market. As the week came to an end the Russell 2000 (RUT) was up 0.30% while the Russell 1000 (RUI) lost 0.03%.  As of Friday RUT is 3.93% higher for the year outperforming RUI by 2.61%. The RVX – VIX relationship tested recent lows on Thursday as it is prone to do when global risk is the big market concern.   On Friday, RUT did outperform RUI a bit (up 1.4% versus 1.2%)[...]

    Bullish SPX Trading Strategies

    Bullish SPX Trading Strategies

SPX was trading at 2068.76 on July 6th. There were 47 days until the August 21st expiration. You believe that there will be a 3% upward move in the S&P between now and then. That would mean a move up to 2130. There are a number of different bullish strategies that would benefit from a bullish move. One trade could be the purchase of 10 SPX August 2100 calls at 23.20. The upside breakeven point is 2123.20. The maximum possible profit is unlimited. The maximum possible loss is $23,200[...]

Monday’s 34% VIX Spike and What to Expect Going Forward

Monday’s 34% VIX Spike and What to Expect Going Forward

One of the top posts of 2013 was All-Time VIX Spike #11 (and a treasure trove of VIX spike data), in which I sliced and diced the twenty largest one-day VIX spikes in the history of the VIX. Nineteen of those spikes were in excess of 30% and with all-time #5 arriving later in 2013 and all-time #15 and #16 following in 2014, I was compelled to comment that despite the seemingly low VIX and concerns about complacency, 2014 Had Third Highest Number of 20% VIX Spikes. Fast forward to the present and[...]

    Bullish EEM Trade from Monday

    Bullish EEM Trade from Monday

As CBOE expands the number of markets available for trading to include foreign indexes we are going to do the same in this space every Tuesday through taking a look at derivatives based on the MSCI family of indexes.  With the weakness in global markets on Monday I decided to search around for a trade in EEM ETF options that may be trying to take the other side of low equity prices. The daily chart below shows that EEM was down about 2.4% which was a bit more than the drop in[...]

Today in VIX, SPX, and RUT - 6/29/2015

Today in VIX, SPX, and RUT - 6/29/2015

A lot went on today as the Greece thing seemed to come to a head. Below are some highlights with respect to the CBOE Volatility Index, the S&P 500, and the Russell 2000 with respect to the reaction of global markets to the news out of Greece. Spot VIX rose just over 34% and the front month July futures contract was up almost 20%. Volume in VIX futures appears to have topped 400,000 for the first time this year. July and August settled within a tick of each other which is a positive for the long[...]

Block Trades - One Bullish and One Bearish VIX Option Trade

Block Trades - One Bullish and One Bearish VIX Option Trade

When I disagree with someone with respect to an outlook for the market or particular stock I with often use the phrase, “that’s what makes a market”. What I mean by that is it takes people with differing opinions to create a viable and tradeable market. As I was looking at the trading activity in the VIX option arena earlier this week I can across one bullish and one somewhat bearish trade that occurred on the same day. First I’ll take a quick look at the bullish trade. Early[...]

Block Trade Analysis - Short VIX Straddle + Long OTM Call

Block Trade Analysis - Short VIX Straddle + Long OTM Call

The June 2015 VIX futures and options met their demise on the open yesterday with settlement coming in at 14.67. One trader moved on to the following month with a trade structure that is unique in the option world, but pretty common in VIX world. Mid-morning on Wednesday a trader sold 22,800 VIX Jul 15 Calls for 1.73 and 22,800 VIX Jul 15 Puts at 1.18 who then completed the trade through purchasing 22,800 VIX Jul 22 Calls at 0.72 for a net credit of 2.19. The payoff at expiration appears below with[...]

    Earnings Next Week - 6/15 - 6/19

    Earnings Next Week - 6/15 - 6/19

We are starting to emerge from the softest part of the earnings calendar and actually have three times as many stocks with short dated options reporting next week versus this past week.  Of course there was only one this week (LULU). The numbers on the table represent three years of history with Max being the biggest gain, Min being the biggest drop, Abs Avg representing the average move (higher or lower), and Last Q being what the stock did in reaction to earnings three months ago.     [...]

Earnings Next Week is all About LULU

Earnings Next Week is all About LULU

Next week is the biggest lull we will get this summer in the earnings calendar as only the always fun Lululemon Athletica (LULU) is scheduled to report earnings before the open on Tuesday next week. Since we have only one company reporting with short dated options available for trading I thought I would dig into this one a little more. First, here are the historical numbers for LULU based on the last three years or twelve quarters. Based on history, an average LULU move higher or lower off earnings[...]

The Week in Volatility Indexes and ETPs - 5/26 - 5/29

The Week in Volatility Indexes and ETPs - 5/26 - 5/29

Short term volatility rose last week based on stock market action and some impact from the holiday weekend. VXST’s 42% rise is partially attributed to the three day weekend being behind us and we can probably give a little credit to the day off Monday for the 14% rise in VIX. The issue that has nothing to do with the four day work week is the shape of the curve below which shows VXST is basically in line with VIX as of Friday's close. This is an indication that[...]

    The Week in Russell 2000 Option Trading - 5/18 - 5/22

    The Week in Russell 2000 Option Trading - 5/18 - 5/22

Small cap stocks took the lead from large cap stocks for 2015 last week as the Russell 2000 (RUT) was up 0.66% while the Russell 1000 (RUI) rose only 0.20%. That places RUT slightly in the lead up 3.94% for 2015 versus RUI up 3.73% for the year. I came across an article from Friday that was discussing how low volatility is for the Russell 2000. I always like to think of volatility in relative terms and for the CBOE Russell 2000 Volatility Index (RVX) this means comparing it to VIX. Using[...]

    Block Trade Analysis - $RUT 850 / 1160 Bull Put Spread

    Block Trade Analysis - $RUT 850 / 1160 Bull Put Spread

Author's note - this is an updated blog from last week correcting the strike of the short put.   Thanks to Robert Shen for the catch. Volume continues to rise in the Russell 2000 (RUT) option arena and my choices among block trades to discuss are on the rise as well. A trade from this past Tuesday caught my eye for three reasons. First, it was not a short dated deep out of the money credit spread – most of the trades I’ve come across and discusses recently in[...]

The Week in Volatility Indexes and ETPs - 5/4 - 5/8

The Week in Volatility Indexes and ETPs - 5/4 - 5/8

Despite a dip midweek, the S&P 500 recovered to put up a winning week on the heels of the non-farm payrolls report. Friday’s 28 point rally salvaged weekly performance, but this was not enough to push VIX to a week over week loss.  Since January 1990 there have been 178 weeks where the S&P 500 and VIX were both higher. I ran some quick numbers and of those 178 weeks, the S&P 500 was higher the 102 times and lower the other 76 weeks after both moved higher in sync. I was a little[...]

    Earnings Next Week - 5/11 - 5/14

    Earnings Next Week - 5/11 - 5/14

Things start to lighten up a bit as far as earnings season goes next week, but there are still 19 stocks with short dated options available for trading the report next week. As always Max is the biggest gain in response to earnings, Min is the biggest drop, Abs Average is the average magnitude of the moves, and Last Q is what the stock did last quarter in response to earnings.  Finally, all numbers represent three years unless italicized.
